584: Captain Carl

In previous podcasts we looked at the careers of bassists extraordinaire, Carol Kaye, Larry Taylor and Nokie Edwards. This week Trick's continues this series with  look back at the career of Carl Radle.


Carl Dean RadleCarl Dean Radle was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 18, 19 42Bitten by the music bug early, he  had the good fortune to spend his formative years playing and gigging alongside :J. J. Cale and Leon Russell, performers who'd go on to have a profound impact on his career. Russell invited  him to California where they played in a number of  gigs that led to the their backing Gary Lewis and the Playboys.Radle played with Delaney and Bonnie, and in 1970 he joined Joe Cocker's musical circus better known as Mad Dogs and Englishmen.  Through these previous associations, Eric Clapton asked Carl to ,join his new project. He worked on all of Clapton's solo projects from 1970 until 1979 and was in his touring band.Carl Radle was an “in demand” SESSION PLAYER for many blues and rock artists during the 1970's. These artists included Dave Mason, J.J. Cale, George Harrison, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Rita Coolidge, Kris Kristofferson, and his longtime friend Leon Russell.

Carl Dean Radle died  May 30^th 1980 from a kidney infection at the age of 37. In 2006, he was posthumously inducted to the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame While his playing was never overtly fancy, Carl knew his role was to put a solid bottom on every song he played.
